Tobi Amusan, the holder of the world record for the 100-meter hurdles, won the women’s 100-meter hurdles gold at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, in the wee hours of Monday (Sunday in Oregon).
She achieved this by running a time quicker than the 12.12 seconds she set in the semifinals, but the over 2 m/s wind speed prevented her 12.06 seconds from being recognized as a world record.
Amusan became the first Nigerian to win gold in the history of the World Athletics Championships after sprinting to a world record 12.12 seconds in the semifinals.
Nine medals in total, including four silver and five bronze, had been won by Nigeria prior to Amusan’s final-day demolition of a competitive field.
Amusan had placed fourth in Doha, Qatar, three years prior.
She had already decreased the world record set in 2016 by American Keni Harrison by eight hundredths of a second. Prior to the semi-final, Amusan had a personal best of 12.40, which she had achieved on Saturday in Oregon during the first round.
