The UN’s request that the Nigerian government free Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, has been applauded by IPOB.
In response to the call, IPOB expressed optimism that Kanu will be released by the Nigerian government.
The Nigerian government had been urged to free Kanu immediately by the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention of the UN Human Rights Council.
The body also demanded that Kanu receive compensation from the Nigerian government for his unlawful extrajudicial detention by Kenya.
Emma Powerful, the IPOB spokesman, stated: “We, the global and noble family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), under the supreme leadership of Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, wish to express our profound gratitude to the UN Human Rights Council’s Working Group on Arbitrary Detention for their courage in reaching the decision contained in Opinion No. 25th July 2022 concerning the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)
“The opinion of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention specifically indicted the governments of Nigeria and Kenya for the kidnap and extraordinary rendition of our Leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu while directing the Government of Nigeria to remedy the situation by releasing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally and to compensate him for the abuse and persecution he has been and is still subjected to.
” Also deserving of praise is our legal counsel, as well as all those who silently toiled and contributed to this historic win. It truly marks an important turning point for our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the IPOB, and all Biafrans around the world.
“We hope that Nigeria would pay attention and immediately follow and implement the UN orders that have already been sent to it exactly. We point out that this is not a Nigerian court order, which is frequently flagrantly ignored without repercussions.
